I discovered this ball of light through a news story on Yahoo about a year ago. I followed her videos and I'm still amazed by what she accomplished.
Talia Joy Castellano was only thirteen. She passed away on July 16, 2013 at 11:22am EST due to neuroblastoma and pre-leukemia. Yesterday would have been her fourteenth birthday. It's not fair, is it?
I don't like it when people say she "lost her battle" with cancer, and I'll tell you why.
Cancer was a bully to Talia, but she won. She dealt with surgeries, chemo, radiation and probably unimaginable physical and emotional pain. And she kept smiling. She stayed positive. Cancer didn't bring her spirit down even when she felt rotten and sick. When the chemo and radiation made her lose her hair, she started wearing makeup. "Makeup is my wig!" was one of her catchphrases. Another was "just keep swimming!" She brought attention to childhood cancer by putting a face on it. Her makeup tutorial videos have inspired so many people.
This sweet little girl lived more in thirteen years than many people live in a lifetime. Her middle name was Joy and she lived up to it by not only being joyful herself, but by bringing joy to others. Maybe she really was an angel on Earth and merely had to go home.
Regardless of the hows or whys: Talia fought her bully, and she won. Cancer didn't dampen her spirit. THAT is how I will always remember her.
Just keep swimming!
